Eugene P. Devine
Attorney
Eugene P. Devine, an Albany, New York native, was elected Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York on November 7th, 2006. In 2014 he was appointed, by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, to the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court, Third Department. Currently, he serves as the Public Safety Commissioner and also took on the duties of Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Schenectady. He was a member of the New York State Judicial Advisory Council, a member of the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board and Chair of the Appellate Division, Third Department CLE Committee. He is currently a member of the American College of Business Court Judges and a member of the Albany County Bar Association Foundation Board.
For more than 30 years, he engaged in private general practice with a focus in the fields of pension/health insurance, Labor, Commercial, Banking, Real Estate and Criminal Law.
His practice led him to many opportunities to serve on various Boards. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Albany Inter-Racial Council, Hospitality House (providing housing and support for those addicted to drugs and alcohol), The Albany Ronald McDonald House (Founding Member), the Board of Associates for St. Peter’s Hospital and Vice Chair of the Albany Medical Center Foundation Board (Founding member of the Children’s Hospital at Albany Med and on air spokesperson and host for their annual telethon). But, his most extensive Board experience came as legal counsel to the International Laborers’ Union, Local 190 Pension and Health Care Funds.
He is the 2013 recipient of the Harold E. Koreman Award given by the New York State Trial Lawyers’ Association in recognition of his commitment to the administration of justice with fairness and compassion.
In 1971, he graduated from Villanova University and in 1975, from Albany Law School of Union University. Before taking the bench, he was the Public Defender for Albany County overseeing a staff of 35 attorneys and was also the Chief Attorney for the Albany County Department of Social Services. Justice Devine has been an Adjunct Professor of Business Law at Siena College and the College of St. Rose. He has also been an instructor for the New York State Bar Association on various topics, in the United States and Canada. He has been a biographee in “Who’s Who in American Law” since 1976.
